License Types

Class 5 License

Class 5 is the most common drivers license, given to drivers that successfully pass their road test. 

What does it cover?

  • Driving cars, vans, trucks, motorhomes, and construction or utility vehicles (2 axles maximum)
  • Driving limited speed motorcycles or all-terrain vehicles (ATVs)


How do I get licensed?

  • Successful passing of ICBC Class 7 written knowledge test
  • Successful passing of ICBC Class 5 road test

Class 4 License

Class 4 (Restricted) is a commercial drivers license, which allows its holder to drive professionally. For operating busses, a Class 4 (Unrestricted) is required.

What does it cover?

  • Driving taxis and limousines (of up to 9 passengers)
  • Driving for ride-hailing services such as Uber or Lyft
  • Driving ambulances


How do I get licensed?

  • Successful passing of ICBC Class 4 written knowledge test
  • Successful passing of ICBC Class 4 road test, including pre-trip inspection
Class 7 licenses, including "N" and "L"

Class 7 License

Class 7 is your entry level driver’s license, and is a prerequisite for all other driving licenses excluding Class 6/8 (motorcycle).

Class 7L is attained after completion of the ICBC written knowledge test. Drivers can progress to their Class 7N after passing the ICBC Class 7 road test.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many lessons do I need?

Most students pass their road test on the first try within just 4 driving lessons. Our experienced driving school instructors will assess your skills and recommend the right number of lessons for you.

If you are in Vancouver or Burnaby, our driving school offers convenient home pickup. Alternatively, we can meet you at a nearby SkyTrain station.

Class 7 is your learner’s license, commonly known as your “L” and “N”.

Class 5 is your driver’s license, earned after holding your Class 7 for a 2 year probation period.

Class 4 is a commercial license. The restricted version allows you to drive professionally, including taxis, limousines, ambulances, and ride-hailing services like Uber or Lyft.

Vancity Driving Academy offers lessons in Vancouver, Burnaby, and Richmond.

To cancel or re-book your appointment for the road test, please contact us 72 hours prior to the road test.

The student is responsible for the cancellation fee ($25.00) if they fail to inform his/her instructor 72 hours prior to the road test.
