ICBC License Types Explained

I CBC Licensing

Understanding the different license types in British Columbia is key to choosing the right path for your driving journey. Whether you’re a brand-new driver or looking to enter the commercial driving industry, ICBC’s license classes determine what you’re allowed to operate on the road.

At Vancity Driving Academy, we specialize in Class 4, 5, and 7 driving lessons to help you reach your goals safely and confidently.

Class 7 – Learner and Novice Drivers

If you’re new to driving, you’ll start with a Class 7 license under BC’s Graduated Licensing Program (GLP). Class 7 allows you to drive passenger vehicles with certain restrictions, such as zero alcohol tolerance, a supervising driver (for L-stage), and driving curfews.

We offer comprehensive GLP-focused training for L (Learner) and N (Novice) drivers to build strong, lifelong driving habits.

Class 5 – Full License for Passenger Vehicles

After completing the GLP and passing the Class 5 road test, you’ll receive your Class 5 license, which lets you drive most personal vehicles – cars, vans, SUVs, and light trucks — without restrictions.

At Vancity Driving Academy, we prepare you for the Class 5 road test with real-world practice and coaching focused on ICBC’s exact testing criteria.

Class 4 – Commercial Driving

Looking to drive for Uber, Lyft, a taxi service, or a medical transport vehicle? You’ll need a Class 4 (restricted) commercial license. It can be used for the following:

  • To drive taxis and limousines (up to 10 persons including the driver)
  • To drive for a ride-hailing service such as Uber or Lyft
  • To drive ambulances
  • To drive special vehicles with a seating capacity of not more than 10 persons (including the driver) used to transport people with disabilities
  • To drive any vehicle in Class 5

The Class 4 (unrestricted) license allows users to drive buses with fewer than 25 passengers.

To attain this license, you must successfully pass a ICBC Class 4 road test with pre-trip inspection. Our Class 4 training program covers everything from pre-trip inspections to advanced road safety – helping you pass your ICBC road test and drive professionally.

Classes 1 to 3 – Other Commercial Licenses

For those looking into specialized commercial driving, ICBC offers specific licenses:

  • Class 1 – All heavy commercial vehicles, including semi-trucks and trailers
  • Class 2 – Buses, including school buses and special activity buses
  • Class 3 – Large trucks with multiple axles (e.g., dump trucks)

A commercial license often requires a medical exam and additional road testing.

Class 6 and Class 8 – Motorcycles

Planning to ride a motorcycle or scooter? You’ll need a Class 8 (learner) license first, then move up to Class 6. These licences cover motorcycles, mopeds, and ATVs. Like Class 7, Class 8 is part of BC’s graduated licensing system.
