How to Get Your Class 4 (restricted) License
Once you have met the requirements, you can work towards attaining your commercial license.
Step 1: Pass your Knowledge Test
Apply for a Commercial Learner’s license at an ICBC driver licensing office. You will need to present 1 piece of primary and secondary ID, and pass your written knowledge test.
Step 2: Pass your Road Test
To attain your full privelege Class 4 (restricted) license, you will need to book and pass an ICBC road test. This test will include a pre-trip inspection portion, unique to commercial license road tests.
Unique Requirement: Class 4 Pre-trip Inspection Test
One unique part of the Class 4 road test in BC is the pre-trip vehicle inspection. Before you begin driving, the examiner may ask you to demonstrate that your vehicle is safe and road-ready.
During this portion of the test, you may be asked to identify and explain key safety checks, including:
- Tires (tread depth, condition, pressure)
- Lights and signals
- Brakes
- Mirrors and visibility
- Horn and windshield wipers
The best way to prepare is to practice a structured inspection routine so you know exactly what to check and how to communicate it clearly.
Our driving school offers Class 4–specific driving lessons and preparation sessions, including:
- Step-by-step pre-trip inspection walkthroughs
